2560x1600 or 5760x1080 options?

I'm just needing some second opinions on this whole idea, so thanks ahead of time for any input you may have.

Right now I'm running two different sized 1080p screens and I'm looking to upgrade. This isn't really going to be for productivity so much as gaming. I also have sort of minimum horsepower to handle these resolutions (HD 7870, so I know I'm not going to be running ultra, no worries) I have around 3 options.

First being getting a korean 30" for ~$500-~$550. I'm willing to take that risk, so no need to try and talk me out of it. It's a one monitor solution, but its pretty huge.

Second, get two more BenQ GW2450's and a three monitor stand for 5780x1080. That's ~$380.

Lastly, get three completely new monitors like the Acer H236hl bid and a monitor stand. That setup is ~$600. Only problem with that is that specific monitor doesn't have vesa mounts, so it's not really an option. Small desk problems.

Thanks guys!

I would go with a 2560x1600p, or 2560x1440p monitor. The scaling on the 30" monitors is ridiculous, coming from a 27" 1440p monitor. Triple monitors will take up almost all of your GPU output options, and will require messing with Eyefinity. Honestly, I would get a nice Korean (about $400-450)non-glossy 27" 1440p monitor instead. Still, you won't be running any of these setups with a single 7870gHz.

How do you fare with having monitors to your sides. Pistol raised a good point that some gamers don't like 3 monitors or get sick from it.

what are the specs of the korean monitor? ips? and res?

pre-made 3monitor setups are usually pretty nice because everything is already there and will most likely work, but read reviews on them and see if others like them/their build quality.

if you are going to be making you own 3 monitor setup make sure you get low-bezel monitors (like those). If they don't fit on your desk,... do you have the money for new desk?

My opinions:

if you can't get another 7870 to CF get a single monitor because more monitors directly and significently decreases fps. in all scenarios, and you're only going to notice the low setting on more monitors.

what i would do:

  • get another 7870 for future proofing (it's a great card)
  • get a bigger desk so if you want to upgrade monitors again later (yrs maybe) you'll have the space now.
  • and get a single monitors (large)

That's what I would do, don't take my opinion to heart

EDIT: i would get monitors in my budget not necesairily what you listed.

darn it brennan,... beating my comment by 30 secs while typing it all out.  ಠ_ಠ

loljk.

I'm kind of leaning towards the single monitor solution. Though it's off topic, what is your opinion on the 16:9 vs 16:10 debate? 1440p vs1600p isn't a very big resolution change, but the sheer size of the monitor is very different as you mentioned. And I'll be getting respectable frames witha 7870, just with modest settings. Until I have the money to upgrade the gpu!

It's okay; I still love you. But I might have to...take care of you, to prevent us from walking into this "problem" anymore.

16:10 does has slightly more pixels to render over 16:9

if you're watching a 720p or 1080p video the 16:10  will have black bars on top and bottom (no concern)

I personally like 16:10 more because i like having more realistate for things. and i play alot of games non-fullscreen so having that extra space on the bottom allows me to play almost 16:9 while still having my icon tray @ the bottom

EDIT: beat ya brennan!

Personally, I think 16:10 is the master-race, but 16:9 is the common one. 1440p is the better option, in my opinion. More support for 16:9, and the monitors are significantly cheaper.

Thanks for your response! I've never had a three monitor setup, so I'm not sure how exactly I'd feel about it. I feel like it would be amazing at first, but then the novelty would wear off and compatibility issues would rise up and become a problem. The Korean is an IPS, 1600p, so it's a good option. Also, I've been thinking about getting another 7870 to CF, but my ASRock Z77 Pro4-m isn't really made for it (only a x4 secondary lane).

good point about your mobo. I'd say stick with 1 monitor now to save some $$ for a newer system when the time comes.

You guys have been really helpful, and really fast to respond haha. I'm willing to spend the extra $180 on a 30", because hey, it's bigger. It is still fairly supported, as far as I know, though 16:9 is much more prevalent.   I also feel like I'm not going to need a new monitor for a long time with a 30" 1600p (unless it craps out). I'm thinking I'm going to be staying with a single gpu configuration for a while, looking to upgrade that in the next year or so with next gen hardware. Thanks again! You guys are awesome. Stay classy

How about 9x 2560x1600 monitors? 3 per graphics card.

Just figured I'd chime in.

Definitely go with a 2560x1440 IPS panel instead of doing eyefinity/nvidia surround. I don't have any experience with triple monitor gaming, but from what I've heard it's kind of a hassle at this point in time. Certain games don't support it very well or at all, and you'll probably have to edit a lot of .ini files in order to get it to work correctly with your HUD. Not to mention that you're going to be using more graphics power with the triple monitor setup, which may cause you to have to lower the settings of your games if you don't have at least three top of the line cards with a lot of VRAM.

The reason I say 2560x1440 instead of its 1600p cousin is because while 1600 has more pixels, 1440 is going to have better pixel density just because of the size differnece between 30" and 27". Better pixel density means you're going to be getting a sharper image.

Also, go with a Nixeus Vue 27 or an ASUS IPS panel instead of a Korean made monitor. You won't get any customer support with a Korean model, while the other brands that are more readily available in the states will have warranties along with people to talk to if something goes wrong.

Or even Monoprice....
