2 way SLI 16x vs 3 way SLI 8x questions

Alright Syndicates I am considering this upgrade 3-way SLI using GTX 580's from my cuurent 2-way GTX580's

So I am running 3 120hz 3D monitors at resolutions of 5760x1080 and am seeing some definate struggle using my current GTX 580 2 way SLI set up.

I have a unique opportunity where my brother will sell me a third card to drop in my rig.

I Currently am running my 2600k set up on a Gygbyte UD7 B3 that will throttle the PCI-e lanes to 8x from 16x.

I have looked everywhere for info on this and have found nothing.

1. what are the pros and cons here?

2. will I get the performance boost i am looking for in games such as high FPS with or without 3D?

forgive me if this has been dicussed before i searched the forums first before i posted and had seen little on this specific topic. also my apologies if this is in the wrong place this question is a little more advanced then a simple GPU question.

and hey!!!!! thanks everyone.

if this little topic see's no activities I will send to the inbox but my money is always on the community you guys are awesome thanks.

cheers

Firstly, this is the perfect spot to post the question, secondly I would try to sell your two 580's and get two 680's or 670's. This is because they are much more powerful cards and have much better ability to run higher resolution because of the extra vram. you might even consider getting the 4 gig edt cards as running tripple monitor 3D means you are actually rendering 5760x1080 twice, this is to accomidate both sides / eyes. If you make this upgrade it should be fine although running dual card sli in 8x, 8x is going to slightly bottleneck your cards. If howerver because it is only two way sli and not three way sli and the pcie slots are both running at 16x this should work like butter. to save a little money you could even get a 690 and oc it to the performance of two 680's. The only problem with this would be that 690's only come with 2gigs of vram paired to each chip.
