First time builder and looking for advice.
Things I'm looking for are upgradability, and mostly focusing on games like cs:go, Civ 5, and hopefully newer tittles as time goes on.
I have an OS, monitor, all the accessories and a pentium 4 heatsink with fan
Location is U.S. Minnesota if that changes anything
I was going to make a list but kept thinking of dat AM4 romp.
AMD will be releasing a new set of CPU's soon somay or may not be worth looking at that stuff and just saving more.
Is gaming all you'll be looking to do?
I'd wait a bit if you can. New GPUs and CPUs will be coming pretty soon and that should shake up the market so you might be able to get current stuff cheaper (especially when ppl sell their current stuff to get the newer stuff).
mostly, but future school work will probably come in but it wouldn't be much more than essays and other things
Alright. I can only recommend what I know and its pretty old (despite that the procs can do 4K)
Give this a jimmie: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/NJ76vK
You can bump the clock up on the 8320E as well as power but another Mobo might be better for that. I would wait for AM4 to see whats up o:
Personally, I'd suggest saving up a bit more (so you have a budget of at least 700 though 800 would be better) that way you can get an i5 and a good gpu. As at 600 I can't squeeze in an i5 (which is the sweet spot for gaming right now).
Also are you going to be overclocking? (would give me a direction in terms of mobo)
This is what i came up with if you want to overclock a cpu in the future: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ryf2qs Just drop in a cheap case and you'll be all set.
Alright... 626$ with some crazy deals...

Basically, i5 6400, 2x4 A-Data 2400 DDR4, 1TB WD Blue, 120GB Sandisk SSD, 500W PSU, Phanteks Enthoo Pro M and R9 380 XFX for 150$...
If you need more CPU power, you can go for i7, if you need more GPU power, you can go for better GPU, you have powerful enough PSU, you have SSD and HDD, SSD for the OS and software, HDD for storage space...
Basically best of all worlds, and it will be enough for gaming for the next few years, if you are willing to go on high and not Ultra...
Can i like this more than once? lol but seriously this is a great pc for 600 (you can get a cheaper case to bring it within budget if need be).
Well, i probably should have gotten cheaper case, but god damn, i live this one...
My main goal was upgradability... So i jumped to the newest of new things - 100 series chipsets. There should be atleast one more generation of Intel CPUs, compatible with those chipsets...
core 1000 or 1100 should suffice?
Jesus Christ, no... That's crap...
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/zalman-case-z3plus
Zalman Z3+
Comes with 4 fans, fully dust proof and a fan controller.
It's weirdly expensive in US... In my country (EU) it's may be 10$ cheaper... Around 35 may be...
EDIT:
Slight changes to the system - 592$

Yeah I'd go w/ the Zalman over those any day. The core 1000/1100 are only compatible w/ mATX boards so you lose out on some expansion. Also the Zalman comes w/ the 4 fans, fully dust proof and a fan controller. Fan controllers are soo convenient (i love the one on my node 304).
My main issue with those pieces of crap is the cable management.
With a lot of effort, this looks awful. Top mounted PSU is something, we ren away from 10 years ago.
HDD mounting is also crappy. If there was a cable management space behind the motherboard, and the HDDs were mounted on the other side of the case, i could have stayed silent... But god damn...
Bad cable management in this day and age is completely unacceptable... I have a raidmax atlas so there's some cable management but unless you have flat cables you can't route the cpu power to where it's supposed do go without using the old push and slide method. A case with good cable management cannot be overstated imo, that's something you learn pretty damn quick.
@ThatBootsGuy you say bad cable management in this day and age is completely unacceptable. Well I say that some of us find it to be a pain in the butt to do and also have functioning gaming pcs without doing it so we don't bother. Now yes I wish my son's pc with a window on it looked better but I and maybe others can relate to this when I say I don't have money to be throwing at making the inside of a pc look better. I guess I could use black electrical tape which is super cheap to cover up the rainbow coloured wiring I see but to use anything else would cost real money and that real money is more important to use on real upgrades or a new build in the future. Just sayin'.
I wasn't saying bad cable management as in what the builder does... I was talking about cases that don't have decent cable management support. If someone doesn't want to put the time or money into good cable management that's fine (the cable management in my gaming rig is ok but i wouldn't call it good) but when case manufacturers neglect giving support for cable management, that is unacceptable (at least for any reputable case manufacturer like fractal).
