I currently have an msi 990fx-gd80 motherboard and the ram just stays at 800Mhz even with oc genie on, and with the clock manually set to 1866 in the bios. I have already updated the bios drivers and this did not help. What is wron with my ram? It is patriot 16Gb 1866Mhz ram.
800MHz = 1600MHz effective. 1866Mhz effective = 933MHz actual. You aren't loosing a whole lot. Also, need to know specific model of memory, as well as BIOS settings, specifically pretaining to the OC and memory. It could be anything: bclk, memroy ratio, incompatible voltage, etc. My best guess is that you don't actually have the memory set to run at 1866 in the BIOS. Most RAM will run at 1600 out of the box for compatibility reasons. You either have to manually set the speed and timings, or enable XMP.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220697 and it is running at the default voltage. and also I forgot that it is 2133 and my board supports that speed.
And suspesions were correct; the base speed for that memory is 800/1600MHz effective, as per Jedec standards.

Try enabling XMP, if your mobo supports it. If not, you will have to manually set the memory speed and timings.
It's an AMD board; no XMP.
ill just set it manyally then thanks for all the help guys!
AMD has got xmp its not a intel only deal but it will depend on the mobo.
If your mobo dosent have a xpm profile it will have a A-M-P profile the first profile on it's list will be the correct seting for your sticks
you probably need to set timings and voltage manualy. in the bios. you can only reach 1866mhz of ramm on that board if you overclock the ram.
from the msi site: Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 1.5 Volt DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600/(1800*/2133*) (OC) DRAM, 32GB Max
Yeah, I have this MSI board and there is xmp support. I used to set the numbers in the bios, but I just use the xmp settings now.
The bios settings are in the OC tab (If I remember correctly).
Another tip is to not use 'oc genie.' I've not gotten good results from the application. If you wish to overclock, do so with the software provided by msi (called Control Center). It's a pain to do, but they nerfed the voltages in the bios.
