£150/$240 gpu

i am currently running an XFX 1GB 7770 and am looking to upgrade sometime soon. i was looking at 7870's and 7950's but as the new 9xxx's series are being announced soon i know the prices will go down. but in anycase i was wondering what you would suggest in a price range of about £150($240). iv never really looked at nvidia cards as i have usually gone for the lower end cards where AMD crads are better for the money, but with the new 7xx series out would any of them match up to the AMD's at this price point?

thanks guys, you are always helpful :D

700 series is largely the same architecture as the 600 series. With that said, the AMD cards are still more bang for buck, and beat Nvidia at every price point.

Currently, I believe the 7850 is in your budget, you might get a 7870 if you're lucky. And the new AMD cards are going to be announced shortly and should affect prices a fair bit, so it is advisable to wait.

Without knowing what the 9xxx cards are going to be like, I would set a goal of trying to obtain a 7950. It is an excellent card, and some are already priced below the £200 sweet spot.

The 700 series with the exception of 780 and Titan are largely the same GK104 chips from the 600 series with some minor improvements and some pric3e reductions but at most price points AMD still offer more for your money 770 can be priced fairly competitively but thats about it

At your budget you can grab yourself a 7870 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-msi-radeon-hd-7870-overclocked-28nm-4800mhz-gddr5-gpu-1050mhz-1280-cores-dl-dvi-i-hdmi-2xmini-dp

which is about equal with the 660ti and even matches or outdoes the more expensive 760 in some titles

or if you can go £20 over you can have a 7950 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-xfx-radeon-hd-7950-dd-28nm-5000mhz-gddr5-gpu-800mhz-1792-cores-2x-dvi-hdmi-2x-mini-dp

Which is about equal to a 670 and does well against the more expensive 680/770

thanks i think i might go for the 7950 because of the extra vram, i just hope it goes down in price abit. follow up question: would there much difference between a good 7950 and a cheap 7970? or would the better cooler give the 7950 the edge?

Not much performance difference between the 7950 and the 7970, which is why I rarely recommend the 7970. Always get a good cooler, with a card that is voltage unlocked, and you will have the best result.

The Twin Frozr has undergone a new revision, and I am unsure how it stacks up. It used to be one of the better 79xx cards. My favourite card, the HIS X2 is hard to come by in the UK, often sold at a very high price.

okay thanks guys :D
