144hz 1080p monitor, is it worth it?

Hello everyone so, before i start upgrading my desktop PC i will start upgrading some peripherals from my setup mainly my monitor after using a 1024x768 one. I want to make the jump for a 1080p monitor and lately i'm starting to play more CS:GO, i'm looking that some players use 144hz monitors and overall the experience is very smooth in other games also. But i dont know if for my use it's worth it. Mainly i play CSGO or Rocket League at the moment but once i start upgrading or get free time i want to play more games like Doom, BF4, Project Cars, Dirt Rally, etc.

For overall gaming getting a 144hz 1080p is it worth it or should i stick with a 60Hz 1080p one at this moment?

IMO if you were going to be expending a lot on a monitor right now I would consider going 1440p at a minimum. 1080p is the outgoing resolution and really 4k and 1440p are going to be gaining in popularity and market share. Maybe consider a 1440p 144hz? There's a 24 inch dell 1440p 144hz gsync monitor going for $400 right now, and there is a 1440p 144hz 27 inch acer for $460.

Well i want to stick to 1080p at this moment becuse i dont have the hardware to push 1440p in games, i have a gtx 650ti Boost xD and first i will upgrade my CPU (i plan on later upgrade to a RX 480 once i do this) and i dont have a huge budget because also plan on getting a laptop for school and a mouse

I mean if your happy on 1080p then ya go for it. I'm still on 1080p 144hz and I think its great, I just would consider maybe buying higher res today since it can be a monitor you'll use for a long while. You can play 720p even on 1440p and it will scale perfectly up since 720p is 1/4th 1440p.

Yeah, it's nice, but only if you can get 144fps/144hz all the time, 60fps is laggy for me now, seriously. You can get a 1440p IPS for it's price.

I think i will stick with 1080p for a while until i feel the need to upgrade to a better resolution and because i'm limited by my hardware and budget.

I plan on going for this monitor https://pcpartpicker.com/product/FZJkcf/acer-xf240h-240-144hz-monitor-umfx0aa001 if i go 144hz 1080p

I think the only game i can do 144fps is CSGO lol but in other games i stay around 50-60fps. I dont know if its worth it going for 144hz in that case or stick with 60hz until i have better components.

If you have a top of the top rig, yeah sure. What's the point of having 1080Tis and i7 otherwise?

A 1080p 144hz is absolutely better than 4k at 60hz.

A couple of things. I'm a big cs:go player and the difference between 60hz and 144hz in cs is ridiculous due to the nature of that game. Keep in mind that if you go RX 480 with that panel, you'll also have freesync which will greatly improve your gaming experience. Freesync/Gsync basically matches the monitors refresh rate to the frame rate being pushed out by the gpu within usually 30-45fps all the way up to 144fps in the case of the monitor you were looking at. Freesync does not work with Nvidia cards though, so you would be confined to AMD's selection though. That's really not an issue if your going to go rx 480 though

:point_up_2: What he said.

The difference is very noticeable, even on the desktop.
If the screen is straight up just for games, 1080p 144Hz is porn.

144hz is immediately noticeable if you've got the GPU to power it, but it's really only -useful- in competitive FPS games.

As for immersion, you'll probably want to consider a widescreen: http://bestultrawidemonitors.com

ANd like some other ppl have mentioned, consider the power you'll need carefully.

And everyday use. I have a 1080p 144Hz monitor and it makes my everyday tasks more fluid. Makes working on anything less annoying.

When it comes down to 144Hz or IPS, what would you go for?

I guess you mean the Dell Gaming S2417DG? I am currently looking at that one and the Dell UltraSharp U2515H(x). The latter has an IPS panel is around 150€ cheaper but runs at 60 Hz. I don't game a lot, but I do play some cs:go. Considering eye strain would 144hz bring noticeable improvements?

If there was a 1000hz 1080p monitor.. I would tell you to get it.

Both. If that isn't an option it is completely subjective. IPS has amazing viewing angles and (more often than not) way better colours than TN or VA.

Buy the one that suits what you do most. If you game more than you consume content, then go 144hz because that is a massive improvement in games. If you consume a lot of content and game on the side, then go IPS because dem colours. You could also consider doing what I've done and getting one IPS screen, and one 144hz screen. My center monitor is 144hz, but I watch all the content I want on my side monitor. You can get good 1080p 144hz screens for like ~$200 nowadays,

and you can get good IPS 1080's for like half that:

So maybe consider snagging one of both?

Why not say fuck it all and just get a good gaming laptop?

A laptop like the razer blade or something like that would give you your cpu upgrade, gpu upgrade, your laptop for school, and all you would need is a monitor to hook up to it.

It would be quite a few birds with one stone.

I'm confused. If you don't have the budget for 1440 why spend the money on 144hz. If the video card doesn't support one it probably doesn't support the other.

1080p with lower settings and freesync can run in the very high teens and low hundreds with ease, and smooth gameplay thanks to freesync. For $210 he can get an acer with a 30-144hz freesync range, which is nuts good.

I can only comment on what my friend has told me, he first brought a 1080p monitor that was 144hz, and he pretty much can't go back to a monitor that is 60. He recently upgraded to a 2560x1080 144hz freesync ultrawide, he's pretty much in love with it, and his main thing when looking at monitors is he wanted the 140hz. And all he really does in general computer stuff, and games.

Edit: I noticed it said my reply is a month later, why was this post displaying at the top? o_o
