1440p or 1080p?

I'm in the market for a new monitor as my current one is getting rather old and occasionally blacks out on dark screens. Would my Asus DCu2 R9290 4GB be able to run games (Dayz, Arma 3, Shogun 2 etc) at 60+ fps at the 1440p resolution?

I would prefer the better FPS on a 1080 than a >60 Fps at the higher resolution.

The monitor will also be used to web browsing, occasional editing of photos (nothing professional)  and watching tv programs/ films.

I have been looking mostly at these two monitors but suggestions are more than welcome

2560 x 1440P -  http://www.asus.com/Commercial_Monitors_Projectors/PB278Q/

Thanks again!

The R9 290 can max most games at 1440p. Not sure how many will be over 60 FPS though. Most should be though.

I want to buy a monitor strictly for gaming, the two monitors you have listed are in my top 5, alongside with Dell and BenQ and such. I would like to find a IPS with good response and refresh but IPS is not a need. So for playing games I'm not sure if i want good color or 1m/s and 144hz. I cannot lock down on one single monitor and it is driving me nuts! I'm using a 280x.

IMO It doesn't sound like you would benefit much from the extra resolution. You should spend the extra cash on two 1080p monitors to make multitasking more comfortable.

Im going through the same dilemma as you are ATM.

Just a quick update guys I managed to get my self an LG 29UB65-P for £200

Saw it as such a great deal so went with that in the end. if anyone wants to know what it is like I shall upadte this thread when I have had it for a little bit.

Good choice bro. The only drawback is size. If it was 34" it would be perfect.

When comes to monitors I like to sit far from big screen. I have LG DM2752 and it's good for me. Perfect colors, passive 3D and good brightnes. If I were to upgrade in the next two years I would pick 1440p 21:9 monitor (34" or more) or 16:9 4k TV (60Hz 40" or more). The only problem is input lag but I'm not too sensitive to this. As long as it is reasonable it's fine for me.
