An i5 for gaming is a very valid option, there's lots of cases I prefer it over an AMD 8320/50... must be the piece of shit nonhuman in me coming out :X
Well if you look at games optimized for low numbers of threads but are extremely CPU intensive, such as Arma and Starcraft, you really need an i5 to get decent performance.
