1070 vs fury X decision

So I am having an internal debate about my GPU upgrade that I want to do and I am torn. I can get the R9 fury X for 399 or the Zotac amp extreme which is the fastest 1070 out right now for 499. I know the 1070 is going to perform better but I am also doing a monitor upgrade and it's hard to find a 144hz 1440p gsync one for a decent price. If I knew when the rx490 was coming out I would possibly wait but who knows when that will be. And I am mostly playing overwatch at the moment which is why I wanted to upgrade to a faster monitor but my gpu isn't fast enough to push a 144hz monitor. I don't think the fury X can either on ultra at 144fps but I could be wrong.

You'd probably be fine with a 480

Otherwise ya, here's a 1080p 144hz TN free-sync display for $209, though the colors and viewing angles are pretty alright for a TN display

Is 144fps really required to play overwatch? I imagine then it must be totally unplayable at 120fps , and a total lagg fest slideshow at 100fps.

that's not how it works...it'll look fine even if you can't hit 144fps, though a 480 should be able to do it anyways, I'm running dota 2 at around 100fps with a 7850 and it looks fine on my display

If that were the case youtube videos would be horrid on a 144hz display, or movies, on a 60hz display, pretty sure all that happens is you get a frame doubling.

Go for the 1070, its newer and faster. I wouldn't bother spending that much for the Amp Extreme, just get a cheaper card that is closer to the $400 mark and overclock it. Here is a 1440p 144hz panel for $540: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/BcTrxr/dell-monitor-s2716dg

Why are you recommending a 480 for someone that wants to play games at 144hz at 1440p? The 480 might be able to play overwatch okay at that resolution but its not going to cut it for other games....

The RX 480 is getting less than 100fps at 1440p according to techspot:

I know I was joking. lol

I read 1080p

In any case, ya Fury X + 1440p 144hz would be fine, wouldn't be as fast when you OC the 1070, but you do get free-sync cheaper, and a water cooled GPU

Also a 1440p 144hz IPS free-sync display only goes for $550, it's $100 Less for a TN display

It's $760 for a g-sync version, runs at 165Hz, not that that really matters, so that's what $300 saved in the end for the same relative experience?

medium-high could probably get there, but I suppose he has the money for whatever basically

Thanks for all the feedback. I know 144 fps isn't needed for OW but if I am getting a 144hz I wanted to at least be able to get close.
I also don't only play OW I want to play other new games like witcher 3 and dark souls but my gtx 670 won't be able to do more than low most likely.
I did consider the Rex 480 but that isn't going to run the previously mentioned games at 1440p on high or ultra.
Maybe I will wait another month or two and see if the rx 490 gets released.

If you are going to be playing witcher 3 and other gameworks titles I would highly recommend buying Nvidia, as AMD cards do not perform well in those titles due to Nvidia not really letting AMD properly optimize for gameworks.

Wait for the RX490 (dual 480 card) if you are really concerned with high fps.

Dude the 490 is a rumor card that hasn't even been announced yet. Are you really going to advise he wait for a rumor card with no eta for or even approximation of specs? Really?

The Fury X at $400 is a pretty solid buy, you might as well just jump on it, a 490 (Dual 480 Card) most likely would be only slightly faster, on the level of the 1080, and ya we have 0 info on it, if it even exists

If the Fury X stays at that price I might just have to jump on it

But then you gotta drop $200 more on the display for the same panel type with adaptive sync

The Fury X in question

Well yeah but its for a newer card, that will get prompt driver updates going forward, and for the extra $200 he can get one of those ips g-sync 165hz panels.

I doubt 165hz is a big difference vs 144hz

and while the 1070 is faster when OC'd you're spending near $300 more for the same overall experience

And the Fury X is still getting faster, it was reported slightly faster than a stock 980ti a little ways back

The PcPer guys said 165hz was uncanny valley territory for them, so it could, and I can tell if my monitor is set to 120hz or 144hz so I kind of buy it.

$300 is probably a bit much. You can grab an Evga Gtx 1070 for $440 off of Newegg right now (found one that is actually in stock), and the monitor is going to run $500ish. If he can get the fury x for $400 than thats pretty good, and he could get a ASUS MG MG278Q for $380, but there are reports of backlight problems with this panel so I would avoid it. The next best is the Acer XG270HU for $450. Still less expensive, but I think the 1070 is worth it.

When Vega gets closer and after Vega launches, the Fury X is not going to receive the same prompt driver treatment as its the older card. The 1070 will have 2 years of prompt support before it gets put into that secondary support slot.

get an RX480 or 1070 and then be happy... cos either one will make you really happy..

you can get a decent 1070 for 430-440 right now if you have the money. its a better buy at those prices even with the furyx at 400.

just dont pay scalper prices.

G-sync one is way more expensive
