1070 now or 480 Crossfire?

Been an AMD fan for years but last fews years well since 2011, moved over to intel side since AMD doesn't have support for usb 3.0, nvme, ssd raid 0 etc...

Anyways I already have 1 rx 480 and one coming on the way for me. But for my brother he's gaming at med-low on his games or ultra/high settings on a few others. He's got my old 7970. I can't wait til June, of this year. What do you guys think I should get 1070 for around 380? or crossfire 2 480s?

Don't feel like waiting cuz even if Vega comes out nvidia already has the 1080 ti lined up and I'll predict it's like what the 980 ti was to the 980. I just want my brother to game at over 100+ fps on certain games etc... and don't compromise on graphics.

if you have a 480, getting another is cheaper and better than a 1070

A single GPU is always a better choice.

Honestly, as someone who does it, Crossfire can and is a hassle. If you just want to play games at high frame rates and not worry about it then the 1070 is the way to go.

why not?

7970 has 3gb of vram and a decent clock speed. why cant he use that for now and you use the 480? vega is coming first and the 1080ti after and the exact date is unknown but the quote is "early 2017" so before june. working vega's have already been demo'ed so they exist in the wild. benchmarks have been done and leaked showing around 12 tflops. vega / zen apu's are being worked on already. why cant you wait 3-4 ish months for a better product?

Get the GTX 1070 now as like others have said Crossfire can be a pain so forget 2 x R9 480 cards. Also with me being Green Team I will push things like Nvidia GameWorks. I'd rather have Nvidia as it allows you to play games the way they were meant to be played. Also finally in the future maybe you can pick up a used GTX 1070 at a good price and SLI. Anyway whatever you choose I hope you get to gaming and enjoy it.

i like how you slate crossfire, then promote SLI.. im not sayying they are as bad/good as each other, but the most common reasons for avoiding multi GPU is the same for both nvidia and AMD, in that most games just dont support multi GPU...

so i agree, single card over 2.. but to be honest, ive got an rx480. my brother has a 1070, his framerate is mostly slightly higher than mine, but really with an fps counter off, you cannot tell the difference...

I did not promote SLI. I said there could be a two card situation later on like the OP wanted but right now with the single card he would get more benefits in terms of visuals with Nvidia than the OP would with AMD and thus I think he should get the Nvidia card.

Vega is literally around the corner if you wanna stick with AyyMD...

But i would pick a 1070 over crossfire RX480's, due to compatibility issues etc. It's less hassle overall.

I have had crossfire 290s for about 3 years and it hasn't been the best experience. Many games don't support CF at launch or sometimes ever. It can get pretty frustrating when games crash, textures flicker, frame rate stutters and you have to disable a card just to get the game to work right.

A few weeks ago I just ended up putting the second 290 in my girlfriend's PC because she needed an upgrade and it wasn't really doing any good for me.

Another thing to consider when running CF is the heat output of the cards. If you game in a smaller room, it's going to get hot in there. I game in a decent sized living room and it raises the temperature in here. Especially in the summer.

My suggestion is buying the best single card you can afford. I'm waiting to see what Vega can do and maybe we'll see some price drops. Even my single 290 can handle most games at high settings at 1080p so I'm not in that big of a hurry to upgrade. Hopefully, my patience will be rewarded.

Its a good rule of thumb to not crossfire or sli cards until your already at the top of the graphics card lineup. Like, get a single 1080 or titan x(P) if you need that tier of performance, instead of a crossfire or sli setup of 1070s or fury xs.

And there is the fact that this generation of GPUs can basically run games maxed out at 1080p. You only need more horsepower if you want to game at 4k. Even a single 1070 can do some 4k gaming with settings turned down.

Buy a used 980ti

then upgrade later when vega comes out.

Vega or 1080Ti in the future.
Just stay with single RX480 for now.

Leave as is. Upgrading now is not the best idea with Vega arround. Either prices on the 1080 and 1070 drop or Nvidia throws in the rumored 1080ti.

What's your display set up?

get a single 480 and wait for vega.

suck it up, be a man.

You want 100+ FPS at what resolution in what game now? 1080p? 1440p? Over 1080p you're getting into 1070 territory, unless the only game you're running is GS:GO and the like (Overwatch). If you want high frame-rates at 1440p and possible higher buy a 1070 today. Simple.

And about Vega, it is not "around the corner". All the comments from the knowledgeable people in the industry say June. I hope it comes in early June and not late July-August. Also it won't be anything spectacular as it very much looks like a compute card and not a gaming card like the 1080. Might be a little faster than a 1080, but don't expect anything big.

480 now, Vega later
