100% disk usage with brand new Munchkin SSD

Hi guys,

Yesterday I received my brand new Munchkin Enhanced Reactor 1TB. The goal of that purchase was simple. I am paying for gigabit and my 1TB WD Caviar Blue wasn't able to keep up when I was downloading games on Steam and other sites. However, I realised that when I download directly on my main SSD, which is an Intel 335 Series, I can hit a CONSTANT 100 MB/s with star citizen and 60 MB/s with any game on Steam.

The problem is, the Intel SSD have only 240 Go so last week I purchased the Munchkin.

I think it is important to say that I reformatted Windows, and I initialized the drive in NTFS.

Now, when I download a game, like star citizen, I can hit 100 MB/s but after like 2 minutes, it drops to 1 MB/s and even stops completely for a good 30 seconds to even a minute. After, it goes way back up.

I did a chkdsk, no errors were found. I did a scan with some other software, it said they the SSD condition was PERFECT.

So here I am. I lookup on Google, but other people seems to experience this whit older drives, not a brand new one. I also tried to disable windows search and another service (that I don't remember), and it changed nothing. Other people also seems to have problems with 100% disk activity all the time in Windows, which is not.my case.

So what do you think ? Is it a bad drive ? Or maybe it's normal and this SSD is not as good as my old Intel one ? Maybe I need to reformat another time ?

Also here are my specs

Intel i-7 3770
GTX 680 4gb
32 GB hyper x @1600
600 W corsair power supply
Intel DH77EB (motherboard)

Your answers will mean a lot thank you !

Edit: I forgot to mention that I did check in task manager which task was using the disk and for example when it is Steam, it gets to 60MB/s when it works normally, but when it jams at 100% disk usage, Steam is using 0MB/s which is why I find it weird.

Munchkin? Are those as good as Mushkin? ;)

This seems like a network issue. What are your actual disk speeds on local file transfer? Using CrystalMark?

I did a Crystal mark test with the 2 drives and I watched closely what was happening. The Intel one was performing normally, with normal speeds. Then I did the same test with the Mushkin (hahaha). For the first 6/8 all was normal but then it happens for the last two ones. It was writing for a second the stops for like 20-30 seconds. The results of the test was a normal speed, but what was happening live was not normal or at least it was not like the Intel one.

I will provide screenshots very very soon.

The C drive (the first screenshot is my main Intel drive.

The second is when it started to get weird.

As I said, the result is 428.5 but the process was way longer than on any other test either on the Intel or the Mushkin.

You may want to contact Mushkin support and see what they say about this issue. You might be due an RMA.

Is the new drive on the same SATA cable and same motherboard SATA port than the Intel was before?

No, I only have 2 SATA III (6GB/s) (they are blue) so I took the SATA cable from my Blu ray drive and I plugged it where my WD Caviar Blue was. Then I plugged the WD in a SATA 3GB/s (they are black). I didn't touch the Intel. The Intel is still the drive where Windows is installed.

Try the other cable from the Intel drive. I have no Idea how that would make sense but at least we can rule out a hardware issue on your side then.

You can try downloading an ubuntu ISO and install that directly onto the Mushkin. When you get the same issues there it is drive.

Great I will do this tonight and post after. Thanks you.

Wow thank you man.

i changed the SATA cable and I downloaded Star Citizen in 5 minutes ahah.

I wasn't even the port, it really was the cable.
