$1.7K NAS/VM server

Looking to build the best NAS/virtualization server I can muster up for about 1.7k. Been toying around with it for a while and it's time to finally get it. Was aiming for 1.5K but 1.7k is the limit but lower is always better. Even if you change everything, all input is greatly appreciated :)

This is what I've come up with so far:

for nas maybe try wd red drives, not that there's anything wrong with the seagate 3tb

Had the seagate 3TB just because it's cheaper

dual xeon.

that is all

i dunno about dual xeon? that seems a little hardcore, if you could say why even i would like to know. but still a xeon build would be the way to go. and some nice ecc-buffered ram to go with it, and a dedicated network card, and maybe a dedicated raid controler depending on whether the on board raid can handel the mass storage tranfering large amounts of data over a network

I plan on getting a dedicated network card and there should be a raid card in the build parts. As far as dual xeon's I kinda wanted to keep the price reasonable and with ecc-buffered ram wouldn't I need a different board as well? Sorry, hardware isn't really my thing.

yeah for the xeon and ram you would need a different board

What's the advantage with going with xeon instead of the i7?

reliability, power comsumption. more consistent but let this guy explain as he puts it right (and there's alot to explain)
